The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati will close the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 registration today, September 28. GATE 2026 will be held for 30 papers on February 7, 8, 14, and 15.

Applicants can submit their GATE 2026 applications on the official website, gate.iitg.ac.in, without a late fee.

To register for GATE 2026, female candidates and those belonging to SC, ST, or PwD categories are required to pay an application fee of Rs 1,000 per paper. For all other candidates, including foreign nationals, the fee is Rs 2,000 per paper.

The original deadline for GATE 2026 registration without a late fee was August 25. Candidates who missed this deadline will have another opportunity to submit their application forms by paying a late fee. Such candidates can submit their GATE 2026 application form till October 9, 2025.

With the late fee, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 application fee is Rs 1,500 for female candidates and those belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), or Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories, while it is Rs 2,500 for all other candidates.

This year, IIT Guwahati has added a new sectional paper , Energy Science , under the Engineering Sciences (XE) subject. Candidates can now choose any two of the eight XE sections. Last year, 14,937 candidates registered for the XE paper, with 11,156 attempting it.

GATE 2026 Syllabus: Computer science syllabus

GATE Exam Date 2026: Clash with UPSC ESE

In a relief to thousands of aspirants, IIT Guwahati clarified that major GATE 2026 papers will not be scheduled for February 8 as the UPSC will also conduct the ESE 2026 exam on the same day. GATE exam 2026 is going to be held on February 7, 8, 14, and 15.

The IIT Guwahati will conduct the GATE 2026 for admission to MTech, PhD and other post graduate courses in engineering from February 7 to 15. The exam will be held in two shifts. The forenoon shift will take place from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and the afternoon will be held from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

While registering for GATE 2026, candidates should upload their photograph according to the following requirements:

  • Upload a recent, passport-size colour photograph (3.5 cm × 4.5 cm).
  • Face should cover 60–70% of the photograph.
  • No caps, hats, sunglasses, or colored glasses; normal spectacles allowed. Glare on spectacles must be avoided.
  • The photograph must be in JPEG/JPG format, with an aspect ratio of 0.66–0.89.
  • Pixel resolution between 200×260 and 530×690, and a file size of 5 kB to 600 kB.

IIT Guwahati has confirmed that GATE 2026 important papers, such as civil, electronic, electrical, mechanical engineering, geology, and geophysics, won't clash with the UPSC ESE exam on February 8.
