IIT Guwahati launches BS in biomedical science and engineering; admissions open April 25

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has launched a four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) programme in Biomedical Science and Engineering. The programme will be offered by the Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology (JBMSHST) at IIT Guwahati. Candidates do not need a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) score to apply for the four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) programme at IIT Guwahati.
The course is being launched in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati and the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati. The application process for the Bachelor of science programme will begin on April 25 and will remain open till May 25, 2025.
The programme includes coursework across pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical areas, along with practical training through engineering modules that connect healthcare and technology. As per the institute, students will also take part in a clinical immersion, where they will observe and interact with surgeons and medical practitioners.
Admission process
To get admission to this programme, candidates should have appeared for Class 12 or equivalent in 2024 or 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology, and should have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in these subjects. Candidates who have qualified the IISER Aptitude Test 2025 are also eligible to apply.
IIT Guwahati BS programme curriculum
The programme covers multiple areas, including mechanics, electrical and electronic systems, mathematical modelling, design and prototyping, and bioinformatics. Students will also study topics such as biomedical devices, pharmacology, informatics and AI in medicine, bioinstrumentation, and sensors and wearable devices.
Graduates of the programme will be able to explore roles in fields such as bioinstrumentation, biomedical devices, pharmacology and therapeutics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and research and development in health technology.

AIIMS, NIPER join IIT Guwahati for new programme
The programme launch event was attended by directors of all three institutions—Devendra Jalihal of IIT Guwahati, Ashok Puranik of AIIMS Guwahati, and USN Murty of NIPER Guwahati. Rahul Mehta and Naveen Jha of the Mehta Family Foundation also attended the event virtually.
Devendra Jalihal, director of IIT Guwahati, said, “This interdisciplinary program brings together engineering, medical sciences, and pharmacology on a single platform, addressing the need for professionals who can work across disciplines to tackle future challenges. As the problems of tomorrow will not fit into traditional silos, this program is designed to bridge those gaps.”
Ashok Puranik, director of AIIMS Guwahati, said, “This multi-institutional collaboration is a landmark initiative that will shape the future of healthcare and education in India. With this initiative, we aim to bridge the gap between engineering, biotechnology, and medicine.”
