IIT Kanpur hosts 58th convocation; awards degrees to 2,848 students across UG, PG, doctoral programmes

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur conducted its 58th convocation ceremony on campus, conferring degrees on 2,848 students across various programmes. The event was held in two sessions—one at the Main Auditorium, followed by another at designated lecture halls for degree distribution by departmental faculty.

This year’s graduating batch includes 874 students with a Bachelor of Technology (BTech), 204 with a Bachelor of Science (BS), 93 with a dual degree, and 26 with a double major.

At the postgraduate level, 480 students receive a Master of Technology (MTech), 269 a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), 83 a Master of Science (MS) by Research, 194 a Master of Science (MSc) in the two-year format, 145 a Master of Business Administration (MBA), 20 a Master of Design (MDes), 40 graduate from the Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLFM), 26 receive the Master of Science in Product Design (MS-PD), and 361 complete the eMasters programme.

In the joint degree category, 29 students graduate from the Master of Technology-Doctor of Philosophy (MTech-PhD) programme, two from the Master of Design-Doctor of Philosophy (MDes-PhD), and two from the Master of Science (by Research)-Doctor of Philosophy [MS (by Research)-PhD]. Among the graduates, 192 complete their programmes with one minor, 90 with two minors, 30 with three minors, three with four minors, and one student graduates with five minors.

President’s Gold Medal goes to Computer Science graduate

Talin Gupta from computer science and engineering receives the President’s Gold Medal. The Director’s Gold Medal for the four-year undergraduate programme goes to Dhruv Misra from electrical engineering, while Kalash Talati from physics receives the same award for the five-year undergraduate programme.

Varun Tokas from computer science and engineering receives the Ratan Swarup Memorial Prize, and Abhishek Kumar Yadav from chemistry is awarded the Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Medal.

IIT Kanpur Convocation 2025: Awards for outstanding PhD work

Twenty-one students receive the Outstanding Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Thesis Award in recognition of their exceptional research contributions. These awards span departments including aerospace engineering, biosciences and bioengineering, civil engineering, chemistry, electrical engineering, humanities and social sciences, economics, environmental science, mechanical engineering, mathematics, and physics.

The convocation was presided over by Mahesh Gupta, chairman, board of governors, IIT Kanpur. Sanjay Malhotra, governor of the Reserve Bank of India and an alumnus of the institute, attended as the chief guest. Manindra Agrawal, director, IIT Kanpur, addressed the graduating students.
