IIT Kharagpur partners with TU Darmstadt on joint academic, research programmes

Both IIT KGP and TU Darmstadt aim for more interdisciplinary programmes, with faculty and student exchanges on the cards

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Technische Universitat Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt), Germany, paving the way for joint academic programmes, research as well as student and faculty exchanges.

A seven-member delegation from TU Darmstadt arrived at IIT Kharagpur on May 20 and the agreement was signed on May 24, at the end of their visit. The visiting delegation included Thomas Walther, vice president for innovation and international affairs, and Jana Freihöfer, dean of international affairs.

A wide range of subjects, including robotics, AI, mechanical, aerospace, computer science and engineering, electrical, electronics engineering disciplines, political science, biological sciences, medical sciences, biotechnology, and industrial engineering, were discussed.

IIT KGP-TU Darmstadt pact

The agreement is expected to lead to joint academic and research programmes. The two universities are expected to lead projects together. Future student and faculty exchanges are also on the cards.

The IIT Kharagpur delegation was led by Rintu Banerjee, deputy director of the institution. Other notable members included Rabibrata Mukherjee, dean research and development; Debashish Chakravarty, dean international relations; Bhargab Maitra, dean student affairs; and Swati Maitra, from Ranbir Chitra Gupta School of Infrastructure Design and Management.

“The MoU covers the academic and research collaboration between two institutes in all areas of mutual interest and includes the possibilities of faculty and student exchanges and SAP,” said Banerjee.

“This alliance stands as a testament to IIT Kharagpur’s continued commitment to international collaboration for academic excellence and is expected to generate far-reaching impacts in interdisciplinary research and global education exchange,” IIT Kharagpur said in a statement.
