An analysis of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling data from the past five years reveals a sharp divide in admission chances between home-state and other-state candidates across top National Institutes of Technology (NITs). Institutes such as NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, and NIT Surat show the widest gaps, where candidates from outside the home state have secured substantially higher JEE Main ranks to gain admission in high-demand programmes like Computer Science and Engineering.

In most NITs, the BTech seat matrix is divided between the Home-State (HS) and Other-State (OS) (All-India) quotas. While 50% of seats go to Home-State candidates, the remaining 50% are available for candidates from other states, with some variations for particular NITs and union territories.
The Home-State quota applies to candidates whose state code of eligibility corresponds to the state where the NIT is located. The Other-State quota covers candidates from all other states and union territories.
As per the official NIT Tiruchirappalli cut-off tables, both Home-State and Other-State closing ranks are listed separately. In the 2025 allocation data, the Other-State closing rank for the Computer Science and Engineering (general) programme was around 1449, while the Home-State closing rank was about 4569 for the same category and round. This shows an approximate gap of 3,000 ranks, indicating that Other-State candidates needed better ranks to secure admission in that cycle.
The JoSAA data for NIT Warangal cut-off list shows Other-State closing ranks for CSE in the range of approximately 2,300 to 3,200 across different rounds. Home-state closing ranks for the same branch were higher, depending on the round and category. The previous year’s trend indicates that Other-State candidates required comparatively lower All India Ranks than Home-State candidates to secure admission.
JEE Main aspirants seeking admission to top NITs can refer to the table below for Computer science and engineering closing ranks under the Home-State and Other-State quotas for the Open, Gender-Neutral category.
