JEE Main Deleted Syllabus 2025: Topics to skip this year; why no optional questions?

NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2025 exam city slip for session 1 on January 10. As per NTA schedule, the JEE Main admit card 2025 will be issued three days before the exam. Accordingly, the JEE Main admit card date 2025 is January 19. The JEE Main 2025 exam is scheduled from January 22 to 30.

Candidates will be required to enter their application number and password to download the JEE Main admit card 2025. Registered candidates will be able to download the JEE Main admit card 2025 by visiting the official website, jeemain.nta.nic.in. NTA has announced the JEE Main 2025 exam schedule that includes paper-wise dates and shift timings for session 1.

JEE Main Deleted Syllabus 2025: Topics removed

The JEE Main 2025 syllabus includes topics from physics , chemistry and mathematics . A few topics were removed from the JEE Mains syllabus last year. The NTA has not removed any topic from the JEE Main 2025 syllabus PDF. However, certain topics that were removed earlier will no longer be included in the exams, as per the updated JEE Main 2025 syllabus. Mathematics: Mathematical Induction and mathematical reasoning units have been deleted.

Physics: In Physics, the communication device unit has been deleted from the JEE Main syllabus.

Chemistry: Surface chemistry, states of matter, general principles and processes of isolation of metals, s-block elements, hydrogen, environmental chemistry, alcohol phenol and ether, and polymers chapters have been removed.

JEE Main Deleted Syllabus: Reason

The JEE Main syllabus was reduced last year due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected candidates' preparation. The JEE Main syllabus reduction aimed to reduce the exam stress in students, allowing them to focus on important topics. However, there is no proper clarification from NTA regarding the reason behind JEE Main syllabus reduction.

No optional questions in JEE Main 2025

The NTA has discontinued the optional questions in JEE Main 2025 . Accordingly, candidates are required to attempt all questions in Section B of the JEE Main 2025 exam. Optional questions in JEE Main were introduced to provide candidates the flexibility in choosing the topics they were most comfortable with.

JEE Main 2025: Reason for scraping optional questions

Earlier, candidates had to attempt any five questions out of a total of 10 questions since JEE (Main) 2021. This change was introduced in Covid-19 pandemic and continued till the year 2024 for the JEE (Main) exam. However, with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring an end to the public health emergency on 5 May 2023, the NTA has decided to revert to the original exam structure from JEE Mains 2025 onwards.

The NTA official notification read, "Since the declaration of UN World Health Organization (WHO) on the COVID-19 as an end of Public health emergency on 05 May 2023, it has been decided to discontinue the optional selection of questions. The examination structure would return to its original format, where Section B will contain only 5 (five) questions per subject, and candidates will be required to attempt all 5 (five) questions, without any options for selection in JEE (Main) 2025 for Paper 1 (B.E./B. Tech), Paper 2 A (B Arch) and Paper 2 B (B Planning)."
