The Centre has approved the opening of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across the country with a total outlay of more than Rs 5,862 crore. For the first time, these new schools will include Balvatikas – 3 year foundational pre-primary classes – in line with the National Educational Policy (NEP 2020).

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the establishment of 57 new KVs under the civil sector across the country to facilitate the educational needs of the wards of the increased number of Central Government employees, the ministry of education said.

A total of approximately Rs 5,862.55 crore has been sanctioned for setting up these schools. These budget allocations will be disbursed over a period of nine years from 2026-27. This includes a capital expenditure component of Rs 2,585.52 crore and operational expenditure of Rs 3,277.03 crore.

Consequently, “Central Schools Organization” was started as a unit of the Ministry of Education of the Government of India.

Where are the new KVs coming up?

Of the 57 schools, 20 have been proposed to be opened in districts where no KV exists despite having a significant number of central government employees. Another 14 KVs will be set in aspirational districts, four in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected districts, and 5 in northeast region or hilly areas.

Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu said four new KVs will be established in Mangasamudram, Chittoor; Bairuganipalle Kuppam Mandal, Chittoor; Palasa, Srikakulam; and Sakhamuru, Amaravati.

KV expansion to create 4,617 jobs

The 57 new KVs have been approved in addition to the 85 schools sanctioned in December 2024 to prioritise states that had not been covered since March 2019.

The ministry said that the administrative structure will require creation of posts at par with the regulations fixed by the Sangathan for running of one full-fledged KV with capacity of 1,520 students. Hence, 86,640 students would benefit.

As per the rules and regulations in place, a full-fledged KV, that has classes from Balvatika to Class 12, provides employment to 81 persons. Therefore, with the approval of 57 KVs, a total of 4,617 direct permanent employment opportunities will be created.

Additionally, construction and allied activities will also generate employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers.

In accordance with NEP 2020, a total of 913 KVs have been designated as PM Shri schools.

How many KVs exist in India, abroad?

Currently, there are 1,288 functional KVs, including 3 abroad – Moscow, Kathmandu, and Tehran. There are around 13.62 lakh students as on June 30, 2025, enrolled in Kendriya Vidyalayas. The opening of the new KV is a continuous process, the ministry said.

“Together with the earlier sanctioning of 85 KVs, the instant proposal responds to the high demand for KVs while balancing pan-India expansion. The CCEA has approved 7 KVs sponsored by the M/o Home Affairs and the remaining 50 by State/UT authorities,” it said.
