Since inception, NIRF has seen a 200% increase in participation from institutes, stated Vineet Joshi, secretary, department of high education, ministry of education.

The NIRF India Rankings 2025 also factored in research papers that were withdrawn, awarding negative scores for such withdrawals. The system has been similarly penalising "self citations" of research publications for all categories since last year.
