NIRF Ranking 2024: Three new categories introduced; IGNOU best open university

NIRF ranking 2024 included around 10,885 higher education institutions, with Anna University securing the top position among state-funded universities.
NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Education has issued the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, which ranks India's top colleges and universities based on a range of parameters and academic excellence. As per the ranking, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has topped the NIRF ranking 2024 list of engineering colleges in India. According to the NIRF press conference, Anna University, Chennai, has been ranked first among state-funded universities, with Jadavpur University and Savitribai Phule Pune University securing the second and third positions, respectively. In the Open University category, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) topped the rankings, followed by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Open University (NSCBMU) and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (DBAU) in second and third positions, respectively.
“By including three new categories — State Public Universities, Open Universities, and Skill Universities — NIRF 2024 becomes more comprehensive by recognising the diverse types of higher educational institutions in India,” UGC chairman, M Jagadesh Kumar said.
After the addition of three new categories, the top-ranking institutions has been ranked and categorised into 16 groups, including universities, colleges, engineering, management, law, architecture, dental, innovation, agriculture, allied institutions, research institutions, open universities, skill universities, and state-funding public universities.
The NIRF assesses India's top colleges and universities based on five key parameters, including teaching, learning, and resources (TLR), research and professional practices (RPC), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI), and perception (PR).
