WBNUJS Kolkata holds on to its fourth spot in NIRF India Rankings 2025; GNLU Gandhinagar topples Symbiosis Law School to bag fifth position
NIRF 2025: The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru continues to retain its top position among law schools in India as per the National Institutional and Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2025. NLSIU Bengaluru and NLU Delhi has been retaining the first position and second position ever since the category was introduced in 2018.

National Law University (NLU) Delhi; Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad, and the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) Kolkata also retained their second, third, and fourth ranks.
The Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar, has climbed to the fifth position from last year’s eighth rank.
The India Rankings 2025 was announced by union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and minister of state for education Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday at an event in New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam.

This is the 10th edition of India Rankings 2025. It started with just four categories in 2015 and has now expanded to 17 categories with 14,163 institutions participating. The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) was added this year as a new category. The ranking since its inception has grown by over 200% in participation, said Vineet Joshi, secretary, Department of Higher Education.
Symbiosis Law School, Pune, which bagged the fifth spot last year has slipped down to the seventh place making way for GNLU Gandhinagar.
NIRF Ranking 2025: Stricter rules
The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has introduced stricter evaluation measures for the NIRF 2025 India Rankings. “It has introduced negative marking for retraction of research papers and citations,” said Anil Sahasrabudhe, its chairman.
The parameters for ranking included “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach Inclusivity” and “Perception.”
