India is celebrating its 77th Republic Day on January 26, 2026, with a grand parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. The parade will showcase the nation's military strength, cultural diversity, and democratic spirit. Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26 to mark the day when the Constitution of India came into force, making India a sovereign and democratic republic.

This year’s celebrations are special as they mark 150 years of the national song "Vande Mataram", an important symbol of India’s freedom struggle.

The President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will be the chief guests at the Republic Day Parade 2026. Their participation highlights the growing partnership between India and the European Union. Around 10,000 special guests from different fields have also been invited.

Notably, two students from Namsai district in Arunachal Pradesh have been chosen to attend the 77th Republic Day parade in New Delhi as special guests.

The students are 10-year-old Nipul Modi, who studies in Class 2 at Government Primary School, Nongtaw Shyam, and 13-year-old Samir Tati, who studies in Class 6 at Government Upper Primary School, Kaisu.

Republic Day 2026: History

India gained independence on August 15, 1947, but adopted its Constitution on January 26, 1950. This Constitution, drafted by a Constituent Assembly headed by BR Ambedkar, came into effect, replacing the Government of India Act. Its final draft was submitted to the Assembly on November 4, 1948.

On January 26, 1950, India became a republic. This event was marked by a 21-gun salute and the hoisting of the national flag by Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India (1950–1962). Since then, January 26th has been celebrated as Republic Day.

This day also holds significance in India's freedom struggle. On January 26, 1930, the Indian National Congress adopted the Purna Swaraj resolution, declaring that India's goal was to achieve complete independence from British rule.
