The Tamil Nadu government held a meeting today with vice-chancellors, registrars, and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) coordinators from 13 state universities. The meeting was led by K Ponmudi, higher education minister to discuss further improvements in the quality of higher education and to ensure better employment opportunities for students. The minister emphasized the need to introduce new courses in AI and machine learning.
The objective of the meeting was to review the functioning and quality of academic programmes, employability opportunities for students, course details, and the overall research environment in universities.
The higher education minister also emphasized the need to introduce new courses in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning. He also stresses upon improving communication skills among students, and strengthening skill development and placement training programs.
“Ponmudi also directed universities to integrate English communication and employability-focused initiatives into the curriculum to help students translate their academic knowledge into practical use,” according to the official statement.
The conclusions of the meeting will be implemented across all universities and colleges with continuous monitoring by Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE), the Directorate of Collegiate Education, and the Directorate of Technical Education to ensure quality improvement in higher education across Tamil Nadu.
A total of 13 state universities took part in the review meeting including the University of Madras, Anna University, Bharathiar, Bharathidasan, Mother Teresa, Alagappa, Thiruvalluvar, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Annamalai, Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University, and others.
S Kengar, higher education secretary, IAS; MP Vijayakumar, vice-Chairman, TANSCHE, IAS (Retd); E Sundaravalli, IAS, Director of Collegiate Education; J Innocent Divya, IAS, Director of Technical Education and T Muthumurgan, TN State Council for Higher Education Member Secretary all took part in the review meeting.
