Mumbai University ranked 664th globally in QS World University Rankings 2026; 17th among Indian institutions

University of Mumbai (MU) has been placed in the 664th position in the QS World University Rankings 2026, marking its entry into the top 20 educational institutions in India. According to the latest list released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the university is ranked 17th among Indian institutions and second among traditional universities in Maharashtra.

Over the past few years, the university has shown steady progress in the global rankings, moving from the 711–720 range to a specific global rank of 664 in this edition.

As per the QS report, Mumbai University scored 91 in employment outcomes, followed by 53.7 in citations per faculty, 41.3 in sustainability, 31.5 in employer reputation, and 27.6 in international research network. The university also scored in parameters such as academic reputation, diversity of international students, and faculty-student ratio.

Awards and national recognition

The university has recently signed multiple agreements with national and international institutions and introduced several professional and skill-based programmes. It has also recorded a 156% rise in the number of research papers published in international journals.

Twelve departments or institutes are currently recognised under national schemes, and more than 80 faculty members are part of professional bodies. Teachers have received 18 national and international awards in the past five years. On average, about 20 faculty members travel abroad each year for academic engagements.

While speaking on the university’s ranking, Ravindra Kulkarni, vice-chancellor, Mumbai University, said, "These rankings are a testament to the dedicated and sustainable efforts made by every stake holder of our university in research and development. We are delighted with these results and will continue to strive for even higher rankings in the future.”

“We've initiated the University Department Ranking Framework (UDRF) to support this goal. We anticipate significant positive changes in our future rankings due to our increasing number of international students, our commitment to sustainable development, and on-going faculty recruitment efforts,” he further said.
