The NEET UG 2026 exam has concluded, and the NTA will soon release the recorded OMR responses along with a provisional answer key. This will enable candidates to estimate their scores and submit objections if needed. The final answer key and NEET UG 2026 results will be prepared only after the objection window closes.

The category-wise NEET cut-off for last year varied across different groups. For the general category, the qualifying cut-off was at the 50th percentile, with marks ranging from 720 to 162. Candidates belonging to SC, ST, and OBC categories had a cut-off at the 40th percentile, corresponding to scores between 161 and 127. 

For general-PwD candidates, the cut-off stood at the 45th percentile with marks between 161 and 144. Meanwhile, SC/OBC-PwD candidates had a 40th percentile cut-off with scores ranging from 143 to 127, and ST-PH candidates also fell under the 40th percentile bracket with marks between 142 and 127.

According to the NEET marking scheme, candidates earn 4 marks for every correct response, while 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer.

The NTA will release the NEET 2026 tentative answer key along with candidates’ response sheets, allowing them to estimate their probable scores. According to the marking scheme, four marks are awarded for each correct answer, while one mark is deducted for every incorrect response.

Last month, the National Medical Commission (NMC) instructed medical colleges nationwide not to grant leave on May 2 and 3 to ensure the smooth and fair conduct of the NEET UG 2026 exam for MBBS and BDS admissions.

According to the Vipin Kumar Sharma, faculty, Botany, Physics Wallah (PW), Biology including botany and     zoology was easy. It was completely NCERT-based. Questions could've  been done using the elimination method for instance, match the following type of questions. 

"There were fewer assertion type questions and statement-based questions.Mostly the questions were lengthy and there were quite a few match the following questions. It would've been beneficial for the  students. Students who had     prepared well would've been able to cover biology in an hour or so. Physics and Chemistry were tougher compared to Biology," Sharma said.

The paper was aligned with  the patterns of previous years' like 2024 and earlier.  Some     questions did take more time for calculation, but other than that it was easy, Amit Mahajan, faculty- chemistry, PhysicsWallah (PW) said.

The NEET UG 2026 paper's iorganic chemistry part was very easy. The questions were very straightforward. All the 13 questions were based on NCERT, according to Mohit Dadheech, Faculty, Inorganic Chemistry, PhysicsWallah.

While a strong indicator of how well you need to score in NEET UG 2026 for MBBS admission, past year's NEET cut-offs will not give you the full picture. It wouldn't have been as stressful and was largely based on what students will have studied in class. Biology was moderate to tough because it was lengthy and time-taking.

So overall, the NEET exam was moderate. Students who put in the time and effort over the last two years will have found it satisfactory, he saild.

NEET 2026 was a well-balanced paper that leaned slightly easier than last year, but importantly, it tested discipline over difficulty. Physics and Chemistry required conceptual clarity and precision, while Biology remained largely accessible—with Botany introducing a time challenge due to its length.

As both NEET counselling – the medical admissions process – and the college approval process continue to stretch over several months, causing anxiety among aspirants and eating into the academic calendar, the National Medical Commission (NMC) is now aiming to streamline the disrupted schedule.

In another major development, the commission has decided to once again allow for-profit companies to establish medical colleges. This policy shift reverses a rule introduced less than two years ago, which had restricted the operation of medical institutions to Section 8 or not-for-profit organisations.
