The National Testing Agency (NTA) has cancelled the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026 exam conducted on May 3. The decision was taken after inputs received from central agencies and findings shared by law enforcement authorities regarding the examination process. In a major development, the CBI has taken custody of the NEET UG 2026 paper leak accused.
In an official statement issued on May 12, NTA said the decision was taken with the approval of the Government of India (GOI) to maintain transparency, fairness, and credibility in the national examination system.
NTA announced that the NEET UG 2026 exam will now be re-conducted on fresh dates, which will be notified separately through the official NTA NEET website. The revised NEET UG admit card date will also be announced soon.
NTA further clarified that candidates will not have to register again for the re-exam. The registration details, candidature, and exam centres chosen during the May 2026 cycle will remain valid for the re-conducted examination.
The agency also announced that no additional NEET examination fee will be charged. The NEET registration fees already paid by candidates will be refunded, and the NEET re-exam will be conducted using NTA’s internal resources.
In NEET UG 2026, over 22 lakh candidates appeared for the exam held on May 3 in a single shift across India and abroad. Soon after the exam, the NTA released a provisional answer key on its official website, neet.nta.nic.in, enabling candidates to review their responses and estimate probable scores.
However, concerns were raised regarding irregularities and an alleged NEET UG 2026 question paper leak. The matter was initially referred to central agencies on May 8 for verification. Meanwhile, state-level investigations, including those by the Rajasthan Special Operation Group (RSOG), also looked into possible malpractice.
The test was conducted in a single session from 2 pm to 5 pm at examination centres across India and overseas, with over 22 lakh students appearing for the entrance exam.
Soon after the NEET UG 2026 examination concluded, speculation and allegations regarding a possible paper leak began surfacing. The Rajasthan Special Operations Group (RSOG) subsequently initiated action over alleged irregularities linked to the exam, while several media reports highlighted detentions connected to a suspected organised cheating network.
A report by Times of India(TOI) said Rajasthan’s Special Operations Group is probing alleged irregularities linked to NEET UG 2026 after investigators reportedly found a set of more than 400 questions circulating before the exam.
Additional TOI quoted DGP (SOG) Vishal Bansal, who said over 100 biology and chemistry questions showed “striking similarities” with the actual NEET paper. He described the material as a “guess paper” or test series, though officials have not ruled out a deeper network.
The report added that similar videos and test-series papers were shared from a coaching institute in Maharashtra’s Latur district.

Meanwhile, the NTA said the exam was conducted under “full security protocol” and that suspicious inputs received on May 7 were forwarded to central agencies for verification. The agency also stated that it was “cooperating fully with investigators” while sharing technical and exam-related data.
