IIT Jodhpur offers students the option to choose Hindi or English, taught by the same faculty, promoting accessible, quality tech education in line with NEP goals.
Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IIT Jodhpur) has become the only IIT to offer BTech courses in Hindi, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). The institute has created two sections exclusively for students opting for Hindi in the first-year.
Calling it a ‘historic step’, the institute said: “IIT Jodhpur offers 1st-year BTech courses in Hindi. Students can choose Hindi or English, taught by the same faculty, promoting accessible, quality tech education per NEP goals.”
The institute decided to offer the BTech courses with an option to choose Hindi as a medium of communication. It also referred to such courses as ‘BTech in non-English’. The technical terms, jargon and core concepts are taught in English, while the explanations will be delivered in Hinglish, a blend of English and Hindi, as per reports.
A total of 120 students have enrolled in the non-English option last year. This includes 14 female and 106 male students.
The same faculty teaching the BTech courses will take the Hindi classes as well. From the second year onwards, students are expected to transition to English sections.
IIT Jodhpur currently offers eight BTech programmes — Bioscience and Bioengineering; Computer Science and Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; AI and Data Science; Chemical Engineering; Materials Engineering; and Civil and Infrastructure Engineering.
Among the 23 IITs, only IIT Jodhpur provides students the option to learn BTech courses in Hindi in the first year.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the Joint Entrance Examination - Main ( JEE Main ) for BE, BTech, and BArch admissions in 13 Indian languages. On the other hand, the JEE Advanced , conducted exclusively for admission into IITs, is offered in both English and Hindi.
