Indian team secures 4th position in International Mathematical Olympiad 2024; highest rank ever
International Mathematical Olympiad 2024: The Indian team has earned four gold medals, one silver medal, and one 'honourable mention' at the 65th IMO.

NEW DELHI: The Indian team, consisting of six students has secured fourth position in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2024. The Indian team has earned four gold medals, one silver medal, and one 'honourable mention' at the 65th IMO, which took place in Bath, United Kingdom. This marks India's best performance since it began participating in 1989, both in terms of the number of gold medals won and the overall rank attained. Previously, India's highest rank was seventh in IMO, which they attained in both 1998 and 2001.
In IMO 2024, the Indian team was headed by Krishnan Sivasubramanian as the leader and Rijul Saini as the deputy leader. The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for high school students, held annually in a different country. The first IMO took place in 1959 in Romania, with seven participating countries. Since then, it has expanded significantly, now involving over 100 countries from five continents.
Narendra Modi praises India’s performance in IMO 2024
Prime minister Narendra Modi expressed pride over India's performance in the International Maths Olympiad . He posted on X, "It’s a matter of immense joy and pride that India has come 4th in its best-ever performance in the International Maths Olympiad. Our contingent has brought home 4 Golds and one Silver Medal. This feat will inspire several other youngsters and help make mathematics even more popular."
IMO 2024: Dharmendra Pradhan's Congratulations students
Dharmendra Pradhan, union minister of education, also congratulated the students. “Congratulate the six-member Indian team of high school students for securing fourth rank globally and registering the best-ever performance by India at the International Maths Olympiad. Kudos to the mentors and teachers. This is a gift from our students on #GuruPoornima. The accomplishments of #TeamIndia is a matter of great pride and joy. I am sure this will encourage, inspire and motivate other students to excel on the global stage,” read the X post by Pradhan.
International Mathematical Olympiad 2024: US secures top position
Internationally, the United States, China, and South Korea secured the top three positions at the 2024 IMO. India, with a score of 167, was just one point behind South Korea. The winning US team achieved 192 points. The competition saw participation from 609 students (528 boys and 81 girls) representing 108 countries.
