National Awards to Teachers 2025: Of the 21 awardees, three are from IITs, one from IIM Bangalore, five from central universities, and the remaining from IISER, IIST, BITS among others.
The ministry of education has selected 21 teachers from higher educational institutions (HEIs) and polytechnics across the country for the National Awards to Teachers (NAT 2025). For the first time, NAT has been extended to cover exemplary faculty members in universities, institutes, and polytechnics, after being earlier restricted to school teachers.
Of the 21 awardees, three are from IITs, one from IIM Bangalore, five from central universities, and the remaining from IISER, IIST, BITS, deemed universities, state universities, colleges, and a government polytechnic.
In 2023, under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), two categories of awards were introduced for HEIs and Polytechnics under the umbrella of NAT; which had earlier been limited to school teachers .
Teachers were selected for the award based on key performance indicators such as teaching-learning effectiveness, outreach activities, research and innovation, sponsored research, consultancy, and faculty development programmes. Of these, learning effectiveness and outreach activities carried the greatest weightage, the ministry said.
The two-step procedure involved initial shortlisting by a preliminary search-cum-screening committee, followed by final selection of awardees by a national jury.
NAT 2025: Two categories
The ministry invited applications and nominations online through self, institutional, and peer submissions under the government’s Jan Bhagidari initiative.
The awards were conferred in two broad categories.
