WBCHSE explains HS semester 4 question pattern 2025, 2x formula for alternatives; subject-wise formats

The West Bengal Council of Higher Education (WBCHSE) has clarified the queries related to the question pattern for the semester 4 of the upcoming Higher Secondary (HS) examinations 2025.

According to the official statement by the council, a 2x formula has been followed in all cases to provide alternatives in the question paper. X in 2x is the number of questions to be attempted from a certain unit or topic, the notice reads. The alternatives will be provided from the same topic or unit, other than in exceptional cases, it added.

The council explained that the number of questions to be attempted from each topic or unit in the question paper would follow a specific formula, 2x where x is the number of questions to be attempted from a certain unit of topic.

In addition, alternatives would be provided for each question type, with the alternatives coming from the same topic or unit. It further stated that the 2x formula would be applied to the majority of subjects, except a few cases not following this pattern.

The council has plans to release subject-wise question patterns. It has urged students to stay informed about any updates and prepares them for a structured and consistent examination process.

The general formula given in the table below will override any other question pattern notified by the council earlier.

WBCHSE had said that the general formula will override any other question pattern notified earlier. In certain unseen questions in language subjects like essay, email-writing etc., the examinee may be provided with more alternatives.

The West Bengal board implemented the semester system for Classes 11 and 12 for the academic year 2025-26. As per the WB HS routine 2025, the exams will be held from February 12, 2026 to February 27, 2026.
